Update: 13 April – 6.36am

New information has been received from provincial police spokesman, Brig Leonard Hlathi, regarding the four constables from Standerton Police Station who were recently arrested.

The Standerton Advertiser’s initial report stated that the Hawks carried out the arrest, but this was soon scrutinized and questioned by members within the local police station.

At the outset of the report, neither Capt Fanie Nhlabathi, spokesman of the Standerton Police, nor any other officers, were allowed to speak about the incident to confirm or deny any of the information or allegations.

According to Brig Hlathi, detectives at the station carried out the investigation and two more officers handed themselves over to their colleagues, bringing the total tally to six officers that have been arrested.

The two officers also appeared in court and were remanded on R1 000 bail.

The case was remanded to 12 June.

11 April – 7.11pm

Four Standerton Police officers who were arrested for business robbery, have been granted bail by the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 11 April.

The four constables were arrested by the Hawks on 10 April.

They are accused of robbing a local shop on 7 January last year.

They were each granted bail of R1 000 pending further investigation and will appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on 5 May again.

According to a press statement released by the office of the provincial commissioner a few hours ago, an internal investigation against the members is also underway.

The Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner, Lieut-Gen Mondli Zuma, said: “Police and all other employees of the South African Police Service should behave themselves within the constraints of the law at all time.”
